Speaker Series: "What Is up with All the Bunker"

Friends of the Bay is pleased to kick off its 2020 Speaker Series with a presentation on “What Is Up with All the Bunker,” on Wednesday, March 25 at 7 p.m. at Friends of the Bay (111 South Street, Oyster Bay) by Carl LoBue, Oceans Program Director for The Nature Conservancy. The health, abundance, and diversity of life in New York’s marine waters depends on a tiny little fish—the Atlantic menhaden, AKA bunker. Called the most important fish in the sea, menhaden are an essential food source for whales, dolphins, striped bass, bluefish, seabirds and more. Following years of unregulated fishing, marine conservation advocates have been working with fishermen, marine scientists, charter boat captains, fisheries managers and others to rebuild menhaden populations. And the results so far have been astounding. Join Dr. LoBue for an exciting conversation on steps recently taken to bring bunker back, and the issues facing managers of this important fish in the months and years ahead. The mission of Friends of the Bay, an environmental advocacy organization located in Oyster Bay, NY, is to preserve, protect and restore the ecological integrity and productivity of the Oyster Bay/Cold Spring Harbor estuary and the surrounding watershed.
